Just realized I accidentally sent this off the list instead of on it, in reply to the perl/php discussion.

I wasn't particularly planning on making this a public project; much of our goal is NOT particularly putting MediaWiki in a better language; as it is implementing the goals we need for our network, and the porting is just something we were going to do in the process so we can easily work and hack it in the future. If enough people are interested, we could do the 'porting' first and work with anybody interested, then release and maintain that separately from our version.
Really, we just want to implement some MAJOR changes to the WAY mediawiki works, while keeping most of the end-user experience. For instance, we want to port to perl, as has been said, and we want to sort of modularize it, with separate portable modifiable modules for (for instance) user authentication, or categorization management, or editing, or article history; that way, these 'bits' can be changed or replaced, while the central 'wiki' module would merely be the hub for all of them to connect - the parser would even be it's own module. Over time, we could perhaps implement things to make our (whatever)wiki (no name yet, maybe MW3 or something) more usable for other things - a specifically designed authentication module to work with LDAP, or a parser module to use *these* /markups/ _instead_ - just to throw out some ideas from recent discussions on this list...
Sorry, last paragraph was pure speculation, mostly we (as I said) want to keep end-user experience unmodified for the first version, then once we have it in a language we can WORK with (I am SICK of php, no offense to those who like it, but I've been wrestling with it too much over the past months) we can start implementing our ideas in an incremental fashion.
Back to the topic, anyway; if I could get some interest, then I wouldn't mind working with some other Perl enthusiasts on the initial port, then I we could keep that updated and released without our modules over time; anybody interested can e-mail me privately - this isn't strictly WikiMedia's MediaWiki related, so let's take it off this list, k?

How many people are in on this and is there a plan yet? Is there a central repository of ideas, methods or anything? Is there a website? I own a hosting company and would be happy to provide some space if need be.

Ah, I'm an idiot; forgot to specify IRC server: irc://irc.freenode.net/#enterwiki
Ken (xevo) and I are in there most of the time if not 24/7 (which is the case as of right now) so if your an IRC user, just add those channels to your auto-join list and stick around, you can jump in the conversation whenever we're discussing it. Beware, I'm a total noob - I know wikis and the wiki concept (and mediawiki itself) very well, but when it comes to code, I'm as nib as they get (-:
Xevo, however, is to be feared. Pheared, even, to use a neologism. ~~~~

Well, we do gaming wikis. I'm not a gamer either, used to play some World of Warcraft, but it got ooold fast. Anyway, I'm the dude who does the php, but I really suck, and I happen to agree with our *real* techi guy that Perl is much better. We're planning to sort of port mediawiki to perl, but it will be a very very long project, and require a whole lot of work. Get in #enterwiki and #enterwiki- tech, and we can talk sometime (I'll get xevo in on it too).

Not particularly, but I'm not NOT a gamer, and I'd love some information about what you are planning!

stop hijacking threads please :)
As you may have noticed, the end of the message you quoted said I had no wish to continue this discussion inside the list and clog it up; so would you (and anybody else thinking of doing so yet again) stop accusing me of clogging the list / hijacking threads / related things.
