After my shared hosting company decided to tell me that they did in fact offer PHP 5.0.2 after assuring me they didn't, I uploaded all the 1.8.2 files, preserving the extension and images dir. Then I got weird errors and consulted #mediawiki, was asked if I had PHP 5. found it wasn't enabled; I did so. I navigated to the wiki, expecting the web installer. But it just worked. Except it doesn't. Please see xinki.org.uk/wiki - try to save, create:-(

Standard "MySQL puked an error" page - "...from within function "LinksUpdate::getExistingInterlangs". MySQL returned error "1146: Table 'db182210138.mwlanglinks' doesn't exist (db686.oneandone.co.uk)".
You need to run the maintenance/update.php script to update the database schema. See http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Upgrading_to_1.8.

Right, I did what was suggested and it seemed fine. Last thing it said was: Initialising "MediaWiki" namespace for language code en... A database query syntax error has occurred. The last attempted database query was: "(SQL query hidden)" from within function "Article::insertOn". MySQL returned error "1062: Duplicate entry '8-Watchlistfor' for key 2 ( db686.oneandone.co.uk)"
Then I refreshed in another window and it said to complete, move /config/LocalSettings.php to the parent directory. So I did. Now it seems to work (fingers crossed) except my AdSense extension isn't shown in Special:Version as it used to be - but it does work! That's not important though, is it?
Thanks for the help!

I don't know if 't is important. You could compare both LocalSettings.php files against each other to see if there are any items you might need to copy from one to the other.

The LocalSettings.php files are different in structure, being two versions apart, but I easily sorted stuff like $wgLogo. All works now. Thanks again!
