Dear All,
I am a user of mediawiki, having my personal content management site running on Mediawiki since last two and half years. I have several extensions installed (typically 30+) that I am finding difficult to keep track of their updated versions, dependencies and so on.
Since I am familiar with Rubygems concept, I am curious if we can have similar mechanism for Mediawiki and if possible for PHP in general. This would definitely help everyone.
Despite I am not familiar with PHP, I would like to make myself available for any other kind of contributions.
Thanks. With regards, Harshal
This has been proposed before. There is usually no strong opposition to such a system - it's just a matter of getting down to it.
The usual obstacles include: * Standardized method of defining/including extensions (including directory structure) * Standardized method of distributing metadata about extensions (version, authorship, description, etc) * A place to officially store them -or- a well defined distributed system (like apt's sources)
(Note: I'm sure there are other obstacles, I just can't remember them off hand)
There may very well be a talk page on mediawiki.org or some other wiki where a discussion about this is taking place (however if there is, I don't know of it).
