Is there a way to add a spell-checker to the wiki (version 1.5.3)?
Personally, I think that's the responsibility of the client.
At least Mac OS X has great common spell-checking across all applications, such that I would personally NOT want the server doing it, if it had the slightest negative impact on performance or experience.

I recently came across a plugin for Mozilla/Firefox/etc that provides spell-checking in any textarea, and seems to work fine with MediaWiki; see http://spellbound.sourceforge.net/

One great thing about putting it into the client would be that it could use a collaboratively maintained dictionary.

Damn, I mean the server, of course. How well does the OS X software work with mediawiki markup?

Not sure why this comes up regularly. I understand that some people are very pleased with their application or OS specific spell checker, however there are many reasons why someone would want to ensure that all visitors to their wiki have access to a server-side at a minimum. As implemented this server-side spell check consumes less bandwidth than mediawiki's preview function. Remember if implemented correctly the server-side spell check should not preclude the use of a client-side solution.
