On my the header of the first sidebar section (usually "Navigation") will appear and then disappear.
Sometimes (depending on several things), it will also cause the entire sidebar to suddenly reposition itself when the page loads.
Visually, it's janky and weird and distracting.
However, other sites have a stable, non-annoying sidebar that doesn't jitter. Examples:
http://domotiki.eu/ http://www.baatwiki.no/wiki/B%C3%A5twiki
And here's two examples of a site afflicted with the Sidebar Fidgets http://seqanswers.com/wiki/SEQanswers http://semantic-mediawiki.org/
FYI: My site, and the two jittery examples above, run Semantic Mediawiki. I've never seen this jitter issue on a pure, non-semantic mediawiki install, but since the issue doesn't seem related to anything "semantic", I'm asking on this list.
I've tried about 10 different approaches, including removing from Common.js all code that seems related to toolbar collapse/expand.
So... what are the two example sites above doing to disable a) collapsible sidebar sections and b) preventing the first collapsible section header from appearing/vanishing?
Many thanks.
P.S. The only thing my searching could unearth (besides the same unanswered question) was this...
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Thread:Project:Support_desk/add_non-collapsibl...
...which is ineffective at preventing the first sidebar navigation section from flashing/jittering.
P.P.S. I've confirmed that my MediaWiki:Sidebar page is formatted correctly.
P.P.P.S. Here's another description the problem: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension_talk:Vector#First_level_text_disappe...
This? $wgVectorFeatures['collapsiblenav']['global'] = false; Only thing I'm seeing is the navbar collapsing unless I'm missing something. Tom

Hmm which I don't see collapsing on semantic mw. What mw version. I think you don't have to call the vector extension any longer in localsettings if you're 1.22+. Vaguely remember that from somewhere. Could cause issues. Tom

...because you're on your iPhone. The jitter does not occur on my iPod 4 either. Tested Chrome and Safari.
On Windows, though, Chrome, IE9, and IE10 show a janky, jittery navigation header.
This? $wgVectorFeatures['collapsiblenav']['global'] = false;
Thank you for that. Extremely helpful. I guess I should've looked in the docs for the deprecated/merged Vector extension. Irksome.
However, for future readers, this is a work-around (a really good one), but not a solution per se.
The original problem remains: The header of the first section of the sidebar appears then disappears... for unknown reasons.

I now see it on chrome. Header Navigation vanished. I'll look later tonight. JS script appears to be hiding it after page load and the JS executes against the DOM element. Tom

Hiding the "Navigation" word via JS is something Vector started doing in 1.18 I think. It should be better in 1.24alpha, see https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=65444#c16 on what's left to do.

The Vector extension was first bundled with MediaWiki 1.18, it has existed longer than that though.
As of MediaWiki 1.22, the Vector extension is obsolete and its stable features were merged into MediaWiki core.
The javascript module vector.collapsibleNav was removed in 1.24 for performance reasons. Once of its quirks was the flash of things like "Navigation". This should be better (try it out on en.wikipedia.org and mediawiki.org which run 1.24alpha).
