I'm testing an upgrade from 1.4.5 to 1.6.7
To test if the spam blocking extension was still working I tried to create a new page by searching for a page I knew wasn't there, instead of a create page link I see:
You can <a href=":spamtest" class="new">create an article with this title</a>.
I remembered that I had to change one of the system messages to enable this link, but when I tried to bring up the Special:Allmessages page it shows as a completely blank page in the browser.
HELP!

I've been trying to work this out myself, but I'm still stumped.
All of the other special pages listed on Special:Specialpages work
I tried putting traces into includes/SpecialAllmessages.php it's getting all the way through generating all the html for the page, and adding it to $wgOut but it never seems to get to the browser.
I tried getting the page with wget instead of the browser and wget keeps telling me that no data was received and retrying.
Any ideas?

Check Apache's error log. Is the web server crashing, perhaps?

The web server isn't crashing, but this shows up in the error log when I try to access the page: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 199 bytes)
As I said everything else (so far) seems to be working. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this?

Google to the rescue, upping the memory_limit in php.ini seems to have fixed it!

You'll have to raise PHP's memory limit, then. 8MB isn't enough to get much done; just loading the code ends up eating most of that limit.
The installer will have slipped a line in your LocalSettings.php to bump it up to 20 MB if it detected the low memory limit and was able to raise it, but you can also edit your php.ini etc directly.
