My enhanced version of Kichik's NiceCategoryList extension is now up on mw.org:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:NiceCategoryList2
This extension displays a category listing, including sub-categories, in a number of useful formats. This is intended to allow easier navigation of a wiki's category tree. It implements a new tag, <ncl>, which generates a list of all pages and sub-categories in a given category. The list can display multiple levels of sub-categories, and has several options for the display style.

I think it would be a good idea to upload some screen shots of what the listings actually look like. Especially differences between other listings, or other related extensions.

Some discussion of performance on large Category trees would be nice too!

It certainly would; unfortunately, my category tree isn't that big (100 or so). Of course, the wiki page is open to everyone, so if anyone has that information, feel free to add it.

I've put up screenshots for the three examples.
