Hi,
I did it with the following:
I Added
#Hinzufügen des Protokolls:"file:\"
$wgUrlProtocols = 'http://|https://|ftp://|irc://|gopher://|news:|mailto:|file:\\';
To the localsettings.php in the wiki main directory.
Now I am able to use links like
[file:\server\path]
That's it

Hi,
I have a mediawiki setup in the intranet. There is a need to provide links to files/directories available in some of the servers. I tried providing the links using [\mcname\directory_path share_name] and [file:///mcname/directory_path share_name]. But this didn't work. I couldn't find this info in the help of mediawiki either.
Can someone suggest me a way to do this.
thanks and regards Shivakumar

Thanks. The change worked for me. I am using Mediawiki 1.4.4 and the below information was available in Parser.php.
But strangely though this seems to work only in IE and not firefox.
The same link in firefox does not appear as an external link (the small up arrow that indicates ext links). On clicking this, nothing happens. But on IE the link appears properly and works properly.
I created a html offline with the "file:///<path>" to check if this was a problem with firefox. There was no problem with firefox it worked fine.
(Same problem on mozilla browser as well).
thanks and best regards Shivakumar

Note that certain modern browsers won't render file:// URLs.

Bear in mind though that file urls are interpreted by the client browser, NOT the server. So if the client doesn't have network access to the file or if its access is via a different path than the path in the url, it won't work.

I tried this but I had to change the code from:
$wgUrlProtocols = 'http://|https://|ftp://|irc://|gopher:/ /|news:|mailto:|file:\\'; to $wgUrlProtocols = 'http://|https://|ftp://|irc://|gopher:/ /|news:|mailto:|file://';
And then, although it creates a link, it doesn't present it as an external link (and it looks the same colour as when you link between other wikis).
The link works fine in iCab. It works in Safari only if I open the link in a new window or tab. And it doesn't work at all in Firefox/ Camino or OmniWeb.
It would be great if I could get this working in Safari as this is our default web browser.
Cheers, Christiaan
