Hi,
I think you don't need Cite extension for this; but need Template:Reflist from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Reflist to use the <ref> tags. Click on "view source" and copy the contents from that Wikipedia page and create a new page Template:Reflist in your wiki, paste the contents there and save. Then at the end of your articles, add {{reflist}} .Now you should be able to see the references tagged with <ref> tag.

I've just installed mediawiki but when I wrote <ref>bla</ref>, "bla" is not where I wrote <reference /> as a footnote. Any idea?

This method don't work (because templates needs others for work, I think). I'll try Frederik's one... Thanks - S.

to me it looks like that template do use Cite extension ...
