You could always use OpenOffice to initially save the documents in MS
Word format, which then might be able to handle them without
crashing. (Maybe even consider installing OOo for those users who
work with MediaWiki the most, in parallel to their existing Word
installations.)
At the very least, you should make the recommendation to migrate to
OOo, even if just partially. Of course they won't accept it, but
every time Word crashes on them, they will imagine hearing your
voice, and it might help them make the switch someday in the future.
