I have a wiki Template called Template:BigDoc with something like the following: This is the top of the document. Field Value A: (fill in a value) Field Value B: (fill in a value) This is the bottom line of the document. I would like to create a document based on Template:BigDoc multiple times a day. This is how I currently do that: 1. Create a new document. 2. Enter the following into the document: * {{subst:BigDoc}} 3. Save that document. 4. Re-edit that document 5. I then see my template text, which I edit. It would be nice if I could eliminate a couple of these steps when creating a document based on a template. Ideally, I would even like to be able to start editing a document based on a template using one click. Does anyone know if this is possible with MediaWiki? Thanks in advance! Tom Purl

Thanks Kevin, that worked really well! I have one more constraint, however. I'm building a simple data-entry "application" using MediaWiki, and the people who will be creating and editing these pages probably won't want to fiddle with the address bar in their browser. Does anyone know if there is a way to do this by clicking on a single link or button? It would even be fine if it was a two-step process, as long as that process was farily simple and intuitive. Also, I'm open to editing some PHP or creating a special page if that's necessary. Thanks again! Tom Purl

Hello J'm running mediawiki 1.6.7 installed from cvs with "svn co http://svn.wikimedia.org/svnroot/mediawiki/branches/REL1_6/phase3"quot;, and all my updates with "svn up". All work fine Tonight my host is migrating from php4 to php5, so i would like to install the la test mediawiki 1.7.1 I don't realy understand realy out to switch from 1.6.7 to 1.7.1, the help on the mediawiki site isn't very clear, can you explain me how to migrate Thanks for all stephane

As I understand it, there are a few different ways. However, I'll share with you how I did it. First, make a dump of your database for backup purposes if everything goes horribly wrong. Then copy your extensions an imgaes directories. Also copy any settings for extensions in your LocalSettings.php. Then I just started with a clean installation of Mediawiki 1.7.1. Make a directory for it or clear out your old mediawiki directory (make sure to back it up!) and then just extract the tarball into the directory or extract the tarball locally and move it all over to your server via FTP, PuTTY or whatever you like. Then follow the regular installation instructions, making sure that the required directories have the right permissions. Run the web installer, enter the IDENTICAL data you had from your previous installation and the installer will detect your old database, update the schema for you and generate a new LocalSettings.php. Move it from the config directory to the installation path and put your extension calls back in. Next, copy your old extensions and images directories back into the installation path and you should be all set. It is suggested you run the link refresh php script after completing the update, as I understand it. Hope this helps and that I didn't miss anything. Hi all! I'm a new member in this list. I have a problem with editing a page. Every time I save a page, there is an error message saying: *********************** A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was: (SQL query hidden) from within function "SearchMySQL4::update". MySQL returned error "126: Incorrect key file for table './tt-wiki/tt810_searchindex.MYI'; try to repair it (localhost)". *********************** I googled this issue and found that the error number for such problem is usualy 1034 instead of 126. Can anybody help me to fix this problem? Thanks Joas

Hi Joas, and welcome to the list. You need to provide more information to get some help: 1. Versions of everything (MW, PHP, MySQL, etc.) 2. The full SQL query 3. Is this a new install? Any recent changes? 4. MediaWiki extensions, interesting changes to LocalSettings.php, etc.? 5. Did it ever work? 6. Have you tried repairing the table? If that doesn't work, drop and re-create it and then run the rebuild search index script. You could try adding a link to the navigation bar, the link could contain the query string parameters [url] that you need.
