Hi all, I found out my shared server finally has PHP5, which means I can upgrade to the latest version of MediaWiki-- sounds like a good thing to me, since I've been hearing that there are lots of extensions (like the ones I've had trouble with recently, like the ParserFunctions) that work better in the later versions, rather than the version I'm currently running, 1.6.10. However, my server specified something interesting with how PHP5 is to be selected:
In order to utilize Php5 simply save all of your files using the extension .php5
If you wish to use solely php5 and not php4, instead of having to save your files using the extension, simply add the following line to your .htaccess
--- AddHandler application/x-httpd-php5 .php ---
And this way all of your files will default to php5.
So if I want to upgrade my existing version of MediaWiki to the latest stable version, how can I do that? Will doing the *.htacess change mess up my existing MW 1.6.10 install? Or can I somehow use the .php5 extension when upgrading? Thanks, -Azurite

Make the change in .htaccess, then perform the upgrade. MediaWiki 1.6.0 should run fine on PHP 5.

Alternatively, you can put the .htaccess file with the change in only the directory of your new Mediawiki installation - this way it only counts for this directory and below, leaving the other installation alone.
And don't forget to put this in:
php_flag register_globals 0
All the best,

Hi all. I want to create an installation on a windows2003 server. PHP 5 is installed and mySQL is installed.
I get the following error from the installation script: ----------------- Checking environment... Please include all of the lines below when reporting installation problems.
a.. PHP 5.2.3 installed Could not find a suitable database driver! a.. For MySQL, compile PHP using --with-mysql, or install the mysql.so module b.. For PostgreSQL, compile PHP using --with-pgsql, or install the pgsql.so module ----------------- I don't find any tutorial that talks about this issue. The error appears even before I can choose a database or login (as it says: the whole driver is missing).
What do I need to do? Thanks Smo

mysql.so is for *nix. You want php_mysql.dll and that's in /yourPhpDirectory/ext/ on Windows. In order to get it all sorted out, open php.ini and make sure:
- extension=php_mysql.dll is not commented out. - extension_dir = C:\yourPhpDirectory\ext (or D:, E: etc)
