Hello Mediawikians,
We are interested on globally changing the search parameters to include Categories. I found an article in the archives, but this dates back to 2004: http://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/htdig/mediawiki-l/2004-December/00274 5.html
In the article it mentions having to change the database to override the users settings. Does anyone know if there is a different/better way of accomplishing our goal?
Thanks,
John Getzke

add this right under it.

Last time I checked, this sets the defaults only for the first time a user logs in. If a user has logged in previously, you need to update the saved preferences via database script as mentioned early in this thread.
Also you should probably be modifying LocalSettings.php rather than includes/DefaultSettings.php....

Don't change includes/DefaultSettings.php, or stuff will just stop working following upgrades. Add the line Jim Hu provided elsewhere in this thread to LocalSettings.php, instead.
