A couple of ideas: - on a page by page basis you can see what version of a resource was available at any given time through the history function; or - take snapshots of the database at key times & have these available to be restored into an empty wiki as and when required. You would also need to backup the images directory at the same time. cd \MySQL\bin mysqldump -u wikiusername -pwikiuserpassword wikidb > \backup\wikidb.sql xcopy \mediawiki\images*.* \backup\images /s /e

We are using the wiki for teaching and discussion. Now it transpires that we must provide some kind of record of what resources were available to the students at a given point.
it's obviously not a question of a normal dump of HTML: I don't think anyone minds *that* much what form it takes but it will need to be accessible to non-techy people.
any suggestions on these 'snapshots' gratefully received. Thanks. _______________________________________________ MediaWiki-l mailing list MediaWiki-l@Wikimedia.org http://mail.wikipedia.org/mailman/listinfo/mediawiki-l
i can't seem to find this in the docs.
how do i make it so the average user can't change the wiki. only admin and people i choose.
refering to a page in the manual would be much appreciated.
thanks,
rob

Please read includes/DefaultSettings.php for all configurable settings.

It seems to indicate that I can make it so that only logged in persons can edit.
It doesn't seem to say if I can again limit this to Sysops only.
Am I missing it?

er...if you want a site that only a handful of people can edit, why use a wiki?
If you want to limit who can edit, just don't give people accounts. they can still view the pages. What function would 'ordinary' users (logged in) have in your system? if none (can't edit....what reason to be a user then?), then just don't let them in in the first place:-)
perhaps I misunderstood (and missed earlier posts)?
How would I link to something like Template:News&action=edit. I would like to be able to go [[TemplateNews | update news | action = edit]] however I can't find out if something like this is supported.
If I chose to use an external link I could [http://mypage/index.php?title=TemplateNew&action=edit | update news] however, this is not good if mypage changes. Is there a way to refer to the index file or the host-path of the current webpage?
Thank you, Graeme.

Try {{SITENAME}} or {{SERVER}}

Breaking it down to two steps should help you find what you're looking for.
1) Disable user creation 2) Disable anonymous edits

I was hoping for some wonderfully non-labour intensive version...:-)
thanks. I had been tending towards the latter as a locked archive..
