Hello, iv've tried to upgrade from 1.4.9to the new stable release 1.5.0. Unfortunately my page was in latin-1. This seems to get a problem now.
I've tried to upgrade like described in UPGRADE: 1) run upgrade1_5.php 2) remove LocalSettings.php 3) install again with same settings
ok, seemed everything to run well, but when i open my page now, there are some unknown characters (IE couldn't even show the page, i had to set it to another charset [was UTF-8 had t set it to westeuropean (Windows)]). Some pages even don't exist anymore (i think that comes from the diffrent charset cause all of these pages have something like äöü in their titles).
Now any suggestions? How can i convert my wiki to utf-8 ?
Thanks in advance
S.W.
I have this problem also. The page goes on the web with version 4.2.X and german - latin1. Update to 4.3.X was ok, there was de-UTF-8 and de-latin1 to klick inside installation. After the update to 1.5. the categories and pages with ä,ö,ü in the titles are corrupt. And the backup from the old database is corrupt... Old pages and categories with öüä are listed with unknown caracters, but by klick are not in the wiki. When I make new, the ordering is not ok, the old are not to delete. In categorie also.
Whats to do? Make a new installation on ather place and insert the 2000 pages new? This is a stupid work... for a long time ;-) And the histrory are lost...
Thanks Dieter

Hm, i just got an idea, that i've read something in UPGRADE and yes i was right: WARNING: If using MySQL 4.1.x, mysqldump's charset conversion may in some cases damage data in your wiki. If necessary, set the charset option to 'latin1' to avoid the conversion. Fore more info see: http://mail.wikipedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2004-November/026359.html
when you say your backup is also damaged i think its no problem of mediawiki, i think its a problem of mysqldump as discribed.
Think i've the same problem cause i wisely made the update at a testserver at home. Just fetched the database from my wiki via mysqldump and then insert it into my database at home.
Well, i can't test it at the moment, but i think thats our problem

ok, could test it now. I'm getting closer to a solution. 1) this time i made the backup with --default-charset=latin1 2)converted the backup-file to utf8 3)runned upgrad_15 and update 4)still can't get sites with äüöß but IE can now show my site
Well, I've found something strange: describe page; gives the following: +-------------------+---------------------+------+-----+---------+-------------- | Field | Type | Null | Key | Default | Extra +-------------------+---------------------+------+-----+---------+-------------- | page_id | int(8) unsigned | | PRI | NULL | auto_incremen | page_namespace | int(11) | | MUL | 0 | | page_title | varchar(255) binary | | | | | page_restrictions | tinyblob | | | | | page_counter | bigint(20) unsigned | | | 0 | | page_is_redirect | tinyint(1) unsigned | | | 0 | | page_is_new | tinyint(1) unsigned | | | 0 | | page_random | double unsigned | | MUL | 0 | | page_touched | varchar(14) binary | | | | | page_latest | int(8) unsigned | | | 0 | | page_len | int(8) unsigned | | MUL | 0 | +-------------------+---------------------+------+-----+---------+--------------
the strange is that page_title is varchar(255) binary. I don't know much about utf-8 and latin-1, but shouldn't be the title still varchar(255) ???

Hi,
I've got the same problems here.

Did you find any solution?
To get the upgrade-skript to run, I had to upgrade my older MySQL-Version 3.x to 4.1. Now I have latin1_swedish_ci as Collation in all my tables, which doesn't seem to be alright. So I'm not sure in which order I have to do what. There are some tasks that may be to do:
* change table collation to utf8_general_ci (is this the right collation?) * run upgrade1_5.php with LocalSettings.php from v1.4 * run Webinstaller without LocalSettings.php
Any ideas?
Regards, Ollie.

I did this:
- run upgrade1_5.php - run update.php
which gave me the same problem you saw, then I put
$wgLegacyEncoding = 'ISO-8859-1';
into LocalSettings.php, which seems to have fixed it, but I haven't finished testing yet.

Well, this tip didn't work for me. Just insert now new all my pages. Luckely its not long ago, that my wiki started so there are only about 20 sites. Well, much work today :(
I give up converting latin1 to utf8 by anyway. Perhaps i'm to silly, but it didn't work, with any configuration i tried.

IIRC you want to put that in *before* you run upgrade1_5.php.
