Hi everyone,
I get a question about localization: I can localize when I am logged in, but I would like to have a specific localization for an anonymous user like for instance http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pagina_principal or http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hauptseite.
Has someone any advice? Thanks a lot, mauro.

You can set one default language and allow users to select individual languges (among those you have made available in the languages folder). The default language is set in LocalSettings.php. After changing the language value, run the rebuildMessages.php maintenance script to update the system messages from the database.
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:%24wgLanguageCode has a little information about the directive involved, and http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Configuration_settings#Localization lists the functions related to Localization. Search seems to be broken on MediaWiki.org right now, so I can't actually locate the "walkthroughs" for localisation, but I know they're somewhere...

Rob,
Thanks a lot. That was of great help!
When you get a chance, you could help me with this other question: where I could download the most recent locale for a specific language as instance Brazilian Portuguese and how I would up load it to my mediawiki site.
Thanks again to you folks, mauro.

Hi everyone,
I've just noticed that the file LanguagePt.php has all localization for Portuguese language. However, if I access http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/, as instance, I find a more accurate localization than the one which comes with mediawiki 1.5.2.
This is my inquiry: Is there some place where someone tries to keep those Language**.php files up to date? If not, I guess the best shot would be to contact those folks in http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/ and ask graciously if they would lend to me their LanguagePt.php file, right? Any clue?
Thanks a lot, mauro.

Well, as for where we *try* to keep them up to date, see my other reply; to get the list of messages as used on a particular site (albeit in a different order, without inline comments, and possibly *customised* as well as translated) use the page [[Special:Allmessages]], clicking the "PHP" link to get the source-code version.
e.g. http://pt.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Especial:Allmessages&ot=php

Hi all,
Two questions:
1- Can I edit Especial:Allmessages ? or change some file in somewhere? 2- How I do 'run' the rebuildMessages.php maintenance script to update the system messages from the database?
Thanks a lot, mauro.
You can't edit Special:Allmessages, but you can edit the individual MediaWiki namespace pages. Each entry on Special:Allmessages will detail the page to be changed; simply click on the link to go to it, then edit it as you would any other page.
Incidentally, rebuildMessages.php updates the system messages in the database, replacing them with the ones from the LanguageXX.php files in the installation folder. This is probably not what you want to do if you are changing the database messages in the manner I describe above.
rebuildMessages.php and the other maintenance scripts must be run from the command line. The exact manner of doing this varies very slightly between platforms; you should consult your PHP documentation if you are not sure.

That's easy - the CVS repository contains the latest file for any part of the software, e.g. http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/*checkout*/wikipedia/phase3/languages/... for index of that directory see: http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/wikipedia/phase3/languages/
Copy it to the directory with your other MediaWiki files, and run rebuildMessages.php as appropriate.

Hi Rowan,
Thanks a lot for your e-mail. I get all information you gave me. For sure it is going to work.
However, I am still tied up. I guess what is holding me is that I am not sure how I run rebuildMessages.php.
If someone says to me how to use the command 'run' with CuteFTP, I will must appreciate.
Thanks a lot, mauro.

"Run" means "execute PHP and tell it to process this script" - it's not something that can be done through CuteFTP, nor any other FTP client; it requires shell access.
