I would like to insert the following text in all new pages when edited:

french comment
[[Image: gradient-allemand.gif|center]]
french comment ---------------
this is to help contributors and to make that all pages have the same structure. Contributors just have to modify this model.
I red about templates, but I did not really understand if this does what I want.

Also check out the Inputbox extension: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Inputbox It provides a nice field to enter the new page's name and a "Create article" button but also has a preload feature and an "editintro" feature, which allows you to add instructions above the edit box. I found this very useful to provide information to users on how to put their data into the preloaded page.

And you can look at PagesOnDemand too

It allows you to parse links to determine if they should be preloaded with different templates based on regexes on the page titles.
