Salvete,
I've spent the better part of two weeks refactoring WikiTeX in C, and we're primed to start hacking Zend.
Would it hinder our efforts to get WikiTeX on Commons if we packaged it as a stand-alone PHP extension?

I wasn't aware there were any efforts to get WikiTeX on Commons, so I suppose it won't harm them. [I don't quite see why WikiTeX on Commons in particular would serve any purpose. Commons is a holding area for free-licensed images.]
Adding a bunch of C code isn't something I'd be thrilled about (yay buffer overflows and memory leaks), but if well tested and security-safe we're not averse to using PHP extensions.
