I've asked this question before, but didn't receive any solution.
Why can't I add pages to Categories? I am using version 1.6.9
As an example, just to make sure I'm adding them correctly, at the bottom of the page, I am putting the following:
[[Category:People|Fish, Ebenezer]]
If I go to the Special:Categories, it shows: 3. People (6 links)
If I then click on People, it takes me to Category:People but nothing shows up other than the simple text I included explaining what the category is for. None of the People category links are shown. Only my overview. Is the category page normally automatically populated with everything linking there, or am I supposed to put some sort of template code on it?
The most likely cause of this problem is that something got broken when I upgraded from an earlier version because the categories I had in there before are still present, but if I hadn't already created the category page, I no longer can because I receive the following error:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: openshowcategory() in /home/trees/wiki/includes/EditPage.php on line 1126
Since I can edit one that existed prior to the upgrade to 1.6.9, it seems to me that something in the above named function must create the category pages and now that it's "undefined", that procedure is not being executed.
Can anyone help me here? I can't upgrade any further because the webserver I'm on isn't using PHP 5.
Sandy
Hi Sandy,
You don't add them to the Category page, you add them to the page that belongs in the category. In your example, go to the Fish, Ebeneezer page and add [[Category:People]] ===================================== Jim Hu Associate Professor Dept. of Biochemistry and Biophysics 2128 TAMU Texas A&M Univ. I do add them to the page that belongs in the category. But apparently, something is broken because they never show up on the Categories page as an alphabetical list.

It doesn't matter which way I put it in, nothing will show up on the Category page after I do so.

Check that the upgrade to 1.6.9 updated *all* the core files. If need be, download the tarball again and overwrite all the existing files.
For a more thorough clean-out, download, decompress and extract a fresh .tar.gz, then move the wiki's LocalSettings.php, AdminSettings.php (if present), images and extensions directories into the newly-created wiki directory, rename the old directory and rename the "fresh" directory so it has the same name as the old one. This will prune out any left-over files from the previous upgrades which may be causing problems, and will also assure that what you're running is pure 1.6.9.

This did the trick! I think what might have happened to cause my initial problem is that when I try to upload the whole set of folders and files to the server, it has a tendency to lose the socket connection so I have to figure out where it ended and reconnect, then resume the upload. It probably lost the connection right in the middle of some category related file and I thought it had completely uploaded it. Starting from scratch, as you suggested, fixed my problem. This time, though, I uploaded one folder at a time. Only lost the connection once.
I need to find out if it is possible to decompress TAR files directly on the server from within CuteFTP. If anyone reading this knows the answer, please let me know.
Thanks, Sandy
