After reading the documents I was under the impression that if I placed
$wgLogo = "$wgStylePath/common/images/wikiSanMar.png";
In the LocalSettings.php our image should be available. But this does not appear to be the case as I now have a blank Logo (which the docs says happens if it can't find the image).
IF I place a png in the common/images directory what specifically do I need in localsettings in order for the image to appear.
Thanks

Hi!
Image too big? Really available?
A link to your wiki would be useful.

It is an intranet and can't be exposed to the outside world.
The image size is 135X135 pixels as document specifies.
Wiki.png (the original shown) is in both skins/common/images and skins/monobook. By default the localsettings.php did not have a $wglogo statement. I now find that if I
$wgLogo = "$wgStylePath/common/images/wiki.png";
And bring up in the bowser it disappears.
It appears that is the statement that is pointing to the wrong location.
??
Thanks for any help. MediaWiki is pretty large and the 'programming' style is different than I learned with php 3x

Is $wgStylePath set at that point? By default as of 1.9 the derived paths are set to their derived defaults, which are not present at the time that you're in LocalSettings.php.
If you use this variable, it must be set.

Brion,
Following info I changed
$wgLogo = "$wgStylePath/common/images/wiki.png";
To
$wgLogo = "$wgScriptPath/skins/common/images/wikiSanMar.png";
And all appears to be well in the world. Probably need to update the documentation which I will try to do.
For best practice with mediawiki, is $wgScriptPath is the best way to go. Appeared to be the only var that made sense here.
Thanks again for the insight

Things to try:
Try other images or other image formats (gif, jpg, etc...). Verify $wgStylePath is set properly. You can also use the full pathname instead. Verify the image file is readable by the server. Try removing the $wgLogo line in LocalSettings.php and see if the default image comes back. Verify you can see the image using other image viewers.
When you say it "disappears", do you mean there is noting there (just the background), a white square, an image for a second or two and then disappears, etc?

Check that you are not just seeing a corner of the image. If the image is large you might only be seeing the upper left hand corner. If the image is large reduce it to about 150/150 pixels and try again.
