I want to keep registration open to new users, but allow login in their account only after the sysop/admin activates the account... sorry if I missed some simple setting.

I don't know of any simple way to do it. I have an email form that users fill in, then I use phpMyAdmin to create their mw_user record, then send them email with a link to the page where they can request that a password be mailed to them.
