I have been unable to perform transclusions of page sections. I have seen several wiki sites reference this method:
{{:Pagename#Section}}
Which should only include the section referenced.
I am only able to transclude the entire the page.
Any ideas?

I am not aware that there is such a feature; maybe the sites you saw were using some special extension or hack to do this?

Back when I was running MW 1.3 or so, when I created a subpage, it automatically created a breadcrumb for me. I hadn't created any subpages since then, until recently. Now, I don't see any breadcrumbs. Was I just imagining that they were there, or might I be missing a setting somewhere?

You need to enable subpages for the desired namespace(s) in LocalSettings.php.
$wgNamespacesWithSubpages[X] = true;
where X is the namespace number, 0 being the main namespace, etc.
