Hi, can anyone recommend me a good *multi-domain webhost* to host my Mediawiki? I am with Siteground. They are good but they are now asking me to upgrade to VPS hosting @ US$99 a month although I only use 0.5% of my hard disk allocation and 0.3% of my bandwidth allocation.
I tried Hostgator but the installation is not automatic. I have to set up my own database manually and I am worried that there will be many features that they can't handle, just like my local webhost in Malaysia. They just give you a hosting and that's it! Hostgator honored their money-back guarantee and promptly refund my money.

You might like to look at Minthost http://minthost.co.uk/ and i've heard of GoDaddy and DreamHost success stories, but what do you mean by "I have to set up my own database manually"?
-Peachey
Hi Peachey, thank you. I hear GoDaddy is for those who don't need technical support, ie. those who can handle their own problems. Yes, I also hear that Dreamhost is good.
What do I mean by "I have to set up my own database manually"? Usually when you set up your wiki, the program will help you install your database. But with Hostgator, it says that there is no database. I asked Hostgator about it and they say I didn't create my database. I have to go to Cpanel and then create the database, using the Database Wizard. I don't have this problem with my two other webhosts.
I am now looking at Serverpoint.com, previously known as APlusHosting.com. It's price is midrange, not the cheapest nor the most expensive. But I am tired of technical problems, so I don't mind paying a bit more.

I use dreamhost @ $10 or so/month for unlimited bandwidth & space plus 1-click installs.
I would recommend them.

I've just checked and they have extended their Valentine's offer until Feb 16th; a year's dreamhost unlimited for $10! - fill in the sign-up form and then enter the promo code "777" at the bottom. That reduces the fee to $10 or so for the year ...
I bought one as an online mirror, it was that cheap.
Usual caveats; no affiliation, no rewards, happy customer.

Unless your using the root account which is unlikely on a shared hosting platform you will have to create a user account with the correct privileges to create a db, or you will have to create a db (and leave blank, eg no tables) and then attach a user to it so it has permissions to use it and then run the installer telling it to use that db and user account.
Hi Peachey, you are right. That's what is required by Hostgator. But my two present webhosts don't require that. This problem is minor but it makes me worry about other problems.
As you know, webhosts install a lot of security features in their shared-hosting servers that makes it difficult to implement certain features such as texvc, to mention one. As it is, one of my webhost still does not know how to enable my texvc feature and so some of my articles appear as garbage, eg. http://teknologi-maklumat.com/wiki/Bilion

99% of shared hosting packages will not be very good for hosting a fair sized MediaWiki environment.
Your best bet is a VPS. I've been using Linode.com for mine for awhile, though if you are pretty large and want some scalability you might try using Amazon ec2 (I'm thinking of experimenting with them soon). The smallest Linode is about $20/mo. Though I warn you that while ec2 is good for scalability and only paying for what you actually use, a 24/7 server will normally cost you at least around $80/mo. But it is a good solution if you expect a lot of bandwidth and visitors.
As for your comment of automatic installations. Most of those are junk anyways, MediaWiki isn't to hard to setup and in the long run you are far better off if you actually understand how to configure the stuff you are running. While a VPS will take a little more understanding of how things work, you can fairly easily get things like Memcached, ImageMagic, rsvg, and all the other special MediaWiki features setup. Most of those will be completely unavailable to you on shared hosting.

Hi Daniel, thanks for your advice. I can't afford a VPS yet and also my hard disk usage and traffic is not big. 0.5% of harddisk allocation and 0.3% bandwidth allocation is not even 1% of my shared hosting allocation. But one day, I may have to look into VPS. Hopefully by then, there is advertising revenue to support it.

Hi PM Poon,
Why do they ask you to upgrade if you are using less than 0.5% of hard disk / bandwidth allocation??
I'm asking this because I'm using the same host as you.
Thank you for your answer and sorry for my poor english.
Laurent
Hi Laurent, first your English is not poor. I can't even find a single grammatical error, LOL.
I find that many a times, it is very hard for me to open my files or save my edits and I get this download index.php box popping up instead. I spend a lot of time on my website and I quite often face accessibility problems. And at Link Referral, I receive some complaints about my site taking a long time to view. So I wrote to Siteground and they say that this is because I am using a shared server and recommended me to upgrade to VPS that cost US$99 per month.
When I first joined Siteground, the service was superb. Accessibility was just pressing one key and the response is instantaneous. After about a year with them, they changed my server (the Ford Model T server must have been reserved for loyal customers, I guess) and after that, I have been having endless problems. During the change of server, my database was corrupted. They asked me to start my website all over again but when I said I was giving up my hosting, the website miraculously went up. I asked them what happened but they refused to give me an answer.
Look at this guy from Siteground: http://forum.siteground.com/showthread.php?t=3627 Actually, my problem is same as his. And there are many negatives reviews about Siteground that tally with my experience lately and confirm my suspicions. At first, I did not dare to voice out since their services had been very good all along. I can't help but think that they are just pulling a fast one. Who doesn't want to earn more money but creating problems so that you are forced to upgrade is another kettle of fish altogether. Hate to say this, but since you ask, I tell you from my heart.
