When I edit a page in MediaWiki, the form contains
these hidden

<input type='hidden' value="20051008140830"

<input type='hidden' value="20051008140830"
name="wpEdittime" />
<input type='hidden' value="106c45867969e6679906ec3acc5b7c2e"
name="wpEditToken" />
I guess they are used to detect and resolve edit conflicts.
Are these values necessary when I (or a robot) create a new page?
I believe that is correct. I don't know what the difference is between
wpStarttime and wpEdittime.
I guess the timestamps could be set to 1970 or blank,
to ensure
that the robot doesn't overwrite any existing pages?
Install your own wiki and try it.
In
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki_Bulk_Page_Creator
the script retrieves the edit page only to extract the token.
What's the point in this? What is the function of wpEditToken?
It's a security meassure. The token is also stored on the server (linked
with the session) and on post, they are compared. This can be part of
the reason why anonymous users can edit but logged in users can not.
