any chance of going 1.58->1.6.1 without any sort of shell access at all? my host is rather strict on this... it may be time to change hosts...

Run the installer again. See the bottom paragraph of http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Upgrading_to_1.6#Run_the_update_script.
