what would the folder be that it needs to write to I remember an error
stating something wasn't writeable and passed it off at the time. Is it a
file in the database itself or a file/folder for the website? When I
originally got the site and running I used a scripted program to install
everything for me and configure it provided by my hosting company.

running into a problem now where I try to login

Assuming you have cookies enabled in your browser...
Can php write the sessions in the appropiate folder?
