I (thought I had) configured a new wiki to upload files and images. When I tested it, it found the file correctly, but only portrayed the "broken image" symbol. Suggestions on how to debug this?

Couple of things: * right-click and copy the URL to the broken image * paste that somewhere and make sure it looks correct * paste into the URL bar and load explicitly: do you see an error, a web page, etc?
Common problems may include: * wrong $wgUploadPath pointing to wrong URL * bad rewrite rules showing you wiki pages instead of images * some system "/images" alias taking over your "images" directory in root
