Hi there,
I am using MediaWiki v1.9.3.
We have a lot of 3-letter acronyms at my company, and I have noticed the search feature does not work correctly when looking for a 3-letter acronym.
Does anyone know how to fix this ?

Hello,
This question could have been asked before. Since I don't really know where and how to search the Q&A archive, could someone either teaches me how to search archive or (both is great, I just don't want to ask too much) tell me what I have nto done right.
I successfully uploaded some pictures. But when I try to put their thumbnails in a table, I got same error message for each of them: unable to open image in a strange subdir (e.g. '/var/www/wiki/testwiki/images/a/a2/xyz.png' : permission denied. <br /> convert: missing an image file name '/var/www/wiki/testwiki/images/a/a2/xyz.png/180px.xyz.png').
Hope I have made my case clear. Thank you for any help.

Hello,
It looks like there are several images directory permission related questions posted recently and nobody has address the temp or thumb directories/files permission issue yet! I hope it is not too trivial to catch our mediawiki experts' attention. When have time, please do help! I am stuck this not important but critical thumbnail problem!

Hello,
I am sending this request for help one more time! I have uploaded some png images successfully. Then I try to create links to the images. I can "imbed" the images in the page, but I can not use thumbnails so that the full image will be shown only when user click on the thumbnail. Looks like mediawiki is creating temporary path(/file too?) for the thumbnail. However, these wiki created path (and/or file) has access permission problem. I have manually tried to change the permissions of these temporary pathes, but it did not make any difference.
Anybody is willing to help on this trivial (or stupid) problem? Just tell me which php to look into will be helpful too.

Hi Lori,
Don't know the specific steps to fix this, but it involves changing the sql lowest character search. MediaWiki search has a minimum of 3 chars because SQL has a minimum of 3 chars. I think that is the first part of your answer anyway.
Good luck! -Courtney

yes you must add ft_min_word_len parameter in your mysql config file and then rebuild the search index
see http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual_talk:Configuration_settings#using_searc...
(NB : I think ft_min_word_len=3 is enough for 3 letters search, use ft_min_word_len=2 only if you also have two-letters words)

Also, note that there is a list of stop word in mysql (see http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/fulltext-stopwords.html), i.e. words that are not indexed (the, and, ...) so if you have three-letters acronyms that match one of these stop words, they won't be indexed anyway.
if you want to remove/change the stop word list, add this in the mysql config file (in the same section than ft_min_word_len) :
ft_stopword_file =
or
ft_stopword_file = filename
(PS : don't forget to restart your mysql server after a change in config file)
Hi Lori,
I've found this page a short time ago and changed my wiki accordingly:
http://xoa.petdance.com/How_to:_Allow_searching_for_short_words_in_MediaWiki
I've put the line in LocalSettings, too, even though it says here
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:%24wgDBminWordLen
that it isn't neccessary with MySQL 4.x or later. It doesn't seem to cause any problems, so I kept the line in LocalSettings.
Greetings Kate

You have to change the parameter in MySQL. In my.ini (Windows - it has a different name in *nix - the MySQL config file) find and set:
# Set the minimum word length for text search ft_min_word_len=3
Restart the DB and you should be good to go.
