Hi,
I think if use multiple word seach in MW, the default Boolean operator used is "OR". How can we make it "AND"? I wonder why MW, even being such a great s/w, not providing some advanced search features built-in

Default mediawiki search is really bad. You should use a search extension, like Lucene.

I agree. Also, check out http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:SphinxSearch as an alternative search tool
Also, check out http://www.hongandjian.com/hongandjian/index.php/Mediawiki_Search_Download

Since those are difficult to set up at the best of times and impossible for most shared hosts, it might help if you instead listed out the things that are "really bad" about it so they can be fixed for the default install.
Offhand, the split between title and text searches is a bit odd, but the only really "bad" thing is that MySQL's search engine by default excludes short and common words.
Can you think of any other problems?

MySQL's search engine doesn't handle plurals. When the words "computer" and "computers" return entirely different search results, that's bad.

Better stop using Google then -- it does the same thing!

In practical use, Google handles plurals effectively. I can't think of the last time I searched for a topic on Google, failed to find it, and then found it using the plural. But on our wiki, this is such a regular occurrence that we have to create redirects for plurals.

They were experimenting with that lately. Thats how searching for 'domas' ended up with DOMA on top ;)

I recently searched on "Johann..." and google kept hitting "John..." and other language equivalents. Google's searching can be annoyingly non-specific at times. In any "advanced search" I'd like to tell it to find/not find plurals or singulars, other languages etc. Google even modifies the search parameters for quoted (i.e. exact text) terms.

Hi,
I have the mediawiki search application ready pretty soon (java crawler based). I will post online somewhere and see if that will satisfy your needs.
I think as earliest as tomorrow I will put it on a website so you could download.
It should avoid the google type of annoyance.
Stay tuned.
Cheers,
Jian

I guess the possibility for wildcard search would be nice if it were integrated into the default install. But the extension needed for that is - thankfully - not nearly as difficult to install as the lucene- or sphinx-extension...

Already done for 1.12.

To address the concern of shared hosts, I can provide a hosted search service for less than 5$ per month. If anyone is interested, let me know.

"AND" is the default; "OR" is not currently available.
