I want to install SMF and Mediawiki within the same database. Using different prefixes for the forum and the wiki will be ok? Also is there a way for the forum and the wiki to have common usernames / passwords?

1. That's what the $wgDBprefix option is for.
2. Perhaps. You'd need to hack one or the other so that they hash passwords the same, and share the same users table. Depending upon the forum software, this might be a simple job or it it might be a complete PITA.
