Is there a MediaWiki add-on, or stand alone server app, that could automatically inject RSS and other XML feeds onto the Main Page of a wiki?

Joseph: yes, there is. Look for either the RSS extension http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Mafs/RSS or install http://www.enotifwiki.org which has this integrated.
