Hey guys, I have a question, is it possible to create a drop down list of categories when a new page is created? To allow users to classify their article under one or more categories? Even a small change in the spelling will cause the article to be classified under a different area..... ideas??
thanks, AJ
I like this idea. Right now, it seems that a modification to the inputbox extension could do this.

Yes, i just already wished to have such a extension for MW in the past. For very small wikis a dropdown-list would be OK, for medium/large wikis it should be something like the view of Categorytree (category, sub-categories, etc.).

Hi Thomas,
i spend a lot time today in trying out this ... I found this: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:SelectCategory
So i installed a MW 1.9 from SVN for testing ... and ... :-)
The extension works fine!
In approx. 3 weeks the 1.9 will be release, an I think, I will migrate at end of january to 1.9 with my production-wikis. Including this extension :)
Best regards, Jan
Way cool.... will try this out and let you guys know...
Thanks a ton!! AJ.

Does anyone know when the stable release of mediawiki 1.9 is expected??

I guess, around January, 10th.

Hio AJ!
MW 1.9 isnt release yet. Its only a development-version available, called 1.9svn (alpha). The latest release you can download as an zip/tar-archiv is 1.8.2.
People, who want to download this alpha-version, need an SVN-Client to download the current repository (which changes several times every day).

Hi, I'm trying to solve a problem I'm having with grouping articles using mediawiki. Is it possible to have a multiple sub-categories with the same name under different categories? E.g :
England - Population - Area United states - Population - Area.
Thanks, Arjun.
I think you are wanting what wikimedia calls name spaces. You need to create custom name spaces. This is easy, it involves editing your LocalSettings.php file.

What do you mean by "hierarchy management"?
Chris
Well.... For e.g. :If you were to group restaurants in various cities under cuisine titles.... You'd have the following logical structure.
New York - Italian - French - Indian
Paris - Italian - French - Indian.
Now, while working with the current categories in mediawiki. If I were to group a restaurant under "Italian" in the city of New York and do the same with a restaurant in Paris. They would both be grouped under the same category "Italian". Whereas I would like them to be in 2 separate areas i.e: an "Italian" sub-category under New York and another "Italian" sub-category under Paris...
I know this explanation is long winded but I'm really trying to figure out a way around this hurdle.... Any help would be most appreciated..
Thanks in advance!!!! AJ.

So you want to be able to do both
Italian:Paris Italian:NewYork
and
NewYork:Italian NewYork:French NewYork:Indian
? I am confused
If you just want New York - Italian - French - Indian
Paris - Italian - French - Indian.
Then make to custom name spaces, one called NewYork and one called Paris
New York:Italian New York:French New York:Indian
Paris:Italian Paris:French Paris:Indian.

I figured as much, when you sent me the method of creating custom name spaces... Now the problem is, if you are dealing with hundreds of cities. creating custom name spaces for them isnt practical.
I'm looking at creating a sub-category which is unique to the category it belongs to regardless of the fact that it shares the same name with another sub-category grouped under a different category...
Thoughts?

Haven't any idea how to achieve it with MediaWiki itself, but what about a workaround?
You could define categories like "Paris/Italian" and "New York/Italian" (no real subpages/subcatagories) or "Italian (Paris)" and "Italian (New York)"? Not very pretty, but it should do the job.

In situation like this I only use category like: * England * United States * Population * Area
And I get what I want just combining them so you'll have: England+Population United States+Population
It's easyer and you'll be able to find what you'll searching for in every custom way of navigation...

MediaWiki 1.9 branch has not been released as stable at present; see the top of http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Release_notes/1.6#MediaWiki_1.6.0 for information on our continuous integration development cycle.
The exact date for release of 1.9.0 is up to Brion, who doubles as our release engineer, but expect it some time this month.
For the adventurous, the bleeding-edge version of MediaWiki can be checked out of Subversion and run, however, please read and understand http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Important_Release_Notes#MediaWiki_1.9 before doing so.
