You should have a look at the pywikibot a.k.a. pywikipedia, which is a python framework for writing bots which run against mediawiki sites.

http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Pywikipedia_bot_on_non-wikimedia_projects has info on using it for non-wikimedia sites using mediawiki.
I did some work with this a year or so ago, and haven't kept up. It does require using the python language, but python has a fairly easy learning curve. -- Rick DeNatale
