Upgrade to 1.9.3 if possible; support for 1.6.x is due to finish in April.
That will be a sad day for those of us shackled to PHP 4 :(

MediaWiki contains various features for this, although these are limited in scope to pages being watched; see user preferences.
If you want a generic email to be sent to you on *every* edit of *any* page, you'll need to look into writing a simple extension which hooks ArticleEdit.
