Thanks - I assume that this would affect all bullet-point lists on the wiki? I want to be able to use text characters for bullet-points for only some such lists on some pages, but, from what you say, this doesn't seem possible.

While you cannot use a text character directly (as far as I know), you CAN replace the bullet-point images with any other image through CSS. So, make a small image of the character you want and then modify the CSS to use that.
