I don't think you are meant to use phpMyAdmin at all unless you want to manually edit the MySQL database, usually web hosts provide a control panel where it lets you do many things with your hosting. There is probably something which says "Manage MySQL Databases" or similar, in their is the place you need to create the MySQL database.

So once I've "unpacked" the tar.gz, I upload the unpacked files and folders to my webspace? And then use phpMyAdmin I guess!

You need to download the latest version of MediaWiki from sourceforge, the .tar.gz file as you thought.
MediaWiki needs to be unpacked to run on a server, this can be done manually in Windows XP using an unpacking program such as WikiRAR or WinZip or (I think) done via UNIX on some servers. Once you have unpacked it (or before if you are using the second method) you need to create a MySQL database using your web hosting package and then go to the wiki directory where it will prompt you to install MediaWiki.

I'm getting a shared package and wanting to install MediaWiki there. It's Linux hosting and has all the prerequisites. My question is this: what is it I am supported to download, and install? I think I'm supposed to download the tar.gz file, but then what? Do I upload it (via FTP) to my webspace, and if so, will it unpack itself or what? I run Windows XP on my desktop. For the record, I haven't purchased the package yet, so I can't try things out yet, just want advice.
Thanks
