In the user preferences under tab "Editing", one can check "Show preview on first edit", that should solve the issue.
To set it globaly, edit your LocalSettings.php file and add: $wgDefaultUserOptions ( 'previewonfirst' => 1, 'previewontop' =>1 );
This way everyone will get a preview of the text when clicking a non existent article. For category it will show the list of articles.
