success, thank you all!
two notes i'd like to make, in my noobishness before i emailed I thought that in editing the two pages i had to substitue the name of my wiki for 'MediaWiki', this is obviously not so as anybody that isn't up before 6 without coffee and tell you.
- MediaWiki:Nogomatch will only be shown if you search for a term
that exists on your(the) wiki, but doesn't have an exact match article title.
thanks again all.

Ok - let's see if I can respond properly....
What I did (by looking at Wikipedia) is edit MediaWiki:Nogomatch to be the following:
<span style="font-size: 135%; font-weight: bold; margin-left: .6em">No page with that title exists.</span>
<span style="display: block; margin: 1.5em 2em"> You can <b><a href="$1">Create an article with this title</a></b> or <a href="index.php?title=How2:Requested articles">Put up a request for it</a> </span> Hope that helps ....

I want to add a link to create a new article from the search page when there are no matches returned for the search, i've gone over and echoed what is stated in
http://www.wikicities.com/wiki/Help:Searching#Create_new_articles_from_the_s...
but I get nothing on the search page after, anybody have any ideas?
Which version of MediaWiki are you using? The Wikicities instructions were aimed at MediaWiki 1.4.
The MediaWiki mailing list is better for this sort of question unless you are talking about a Wikimedia site. You can subscribe to that at http://mail.wikipedia.org/mailman/listinfo/mediawiki-l
Angela.
haha, my bad about the wrong list, I'm using the latest (as of yesterday) 1.4. _______________________________________________ MediaWiki-l mailing list MediaWiki-l@Wikimedia.org http://mail.wikipedia.org/mailman/listinfo/mediawiki-l
