I don't know about the extension, but it can be quite easy to do just using templates. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Emot and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Smiley for an idea of how it's been done on Wikipedia - though this may not be desirable for you, I hope it can give you something to think about!
