Hey, Thanks a lot for that detailed information ! But i have a second problem too: I installed a fresh version (1.5.2 ) on php 5.0.5 (apache) and MySql 4.1.7. While saving a new- or editing a old page it takes 20 to 40 seconds. Do you think this problems could be caused by the php 5.0.5 ? Very Best Regards eke

are there risks in changing the php-versions from 4xxx to 5xxx and

PHP 5.1 and 5.0.5 and later will likely encounter many problems with MediaWiki 1.4.x or 1.3.x; if you're running an old MediaWiki you may need to upgrade to the current 1.5 release (1.5.2 at the moment).
PHP 5.0.4 and earlier should be ok on the current 1.4. release, but will disable the default skin on 1.3 due to incompatibilities with the old PHPTAL theme engine.
Be sure to always run the most recent release within your release branch at least; for instance the recent PHP 4.4.1 introduced a few new problems which had to be worked around in 1.5.2/1.4.12/1.3.18.
In general, *as long as you've got compatible versions*, upgrading to PHP 5 or downgrading to 4 should not cause problems.
