Found the solution
Mediawiki needs php5 and by my webhost it needs a change in the .htaccess file because standard is still php4
AddType application/x-httpd-php5 .php5 .php
But with SUEXEX enabled this doesn't work any more and needs to be changed to
AddHandler application/x-httpd-php5 .php5 .php
Small detail big difference.

You perhaps have to reassign permissions of various files? Not knowing what is wrong or how things are configured means that's all I can tell you. :)
