It worked! That was a problem in phpmyadmin.
Also i have seen some entries on the wiki that tells the user to backup using phpmyadmin. I guess this should be removed since, like me, he won't be able to restore his backup without breaking non-ASCII characters.

Forget phpMyAdmin. The export function completely breaks non-ASCII encodings for MediaWiki. I think this happens because MediaWiki uses a Latin1 charset to store UTF-8.
All my problems regarding export/import MediaWiki databases were fixed once I started using mysqldump command-line utility to do the dumps.
