Many thanks. This worked well. We wrote a registration form that went to a php file for processing. We then wrote another php script to parse for invalid/duplicate usernames, exclude them, and inserted the rest into the user table.

Provided one does it correctly, you can mass-create users in the users table using SQL. Note that you shouldn't mass delete them, though.
Search for "mediawiki user_password md5" on Google, and you will find the following in a useful post from Brion Vibber:
insert into user (user_name) values('Blargy'); update user set user_password=md5(concat(user_id,'-',md5('wonko'))) where user_name='Blargy';
These are the two SQL statements needed. I'd suggest you create a small PHP script which loops through a list of users and issues these queries for each one.

Hi,
I am starting a Wiki for a university course. Is it possible to register people in batches? I.e. 300-400 accounts created in a batch on mediawiki?
