I understand your concern.
But I'm running a small, private wiki so performance is not an issue.
I found one at http://mcintosh.cjb.net/wiki/index.php/Spell_Checker but my knowledge of PHP is basically is null.
Anybody tried that one or willing to help me install it?

Is there a way to add a spell-checker to the wiki (version 1.5.3)?
Personally, I think that's the responsibility of the client.
At least Mac OS X has great common spell-checking across all applications, such that I would personally NOT want the server doing it, if it had the slightest negative impact on performance or experience.
