Which files are they talking about, that I need to remove? (I used to know the answer but it's been over a year and I didn't have much of a grounding even then.)
PHP links with a mysql client library, which is what communicates with the mysql server. Seems that you could upgrade that library (look for a package like libmysqlclient16). Using an older library should be safe.
