Yesterday I innstalled a new MediaWiki (version 1.16.2) on the same site. The new installation runs without any problems, which indicates that both MySQL and PhP runs properly. But the old installation still doesn't show anything else than blank pages. I think I must have done something wrong to the old installation, but I'm not able to figure out what has changed. LocalSettings.php is unaltered. As the site is located on an ordinary web hotel without shell access, I have limited opportunities to investigate what has happended. Now, I think the easiest way out of this is to use the new installation and rebuild the wiki. (And employ proper backup routines in the future, of course!)
Thank you for your answers!

Most of the time that means that PHP is not communicating with the database. You may want to check your database settings or see if MySQL is running
MediaWiki should fail gracefully if it couldn't connect to the db. A blank page would mean a PHP error (it should get an entry on its error log). Not having changed any php file, maybe it is an out-of-memory error.
