OK, I solved my own problem.
I couldn't provide a URL to Brion's request (server only runs on localhost/127.0.0.1) so I was preparing a specific page I could save as HTML save wiki text etc.etc.etc. for an archive.
Then 'all of a sudden' the problem was gone. Seems that this version of MW is more serious about closing all the HTML tags that require closing (like TD and TR tags).
I edited the original offending page to properly close all tags (table, tr and td) and the problem was indeed gone.
Sorry to have bothered you all.

I seem to have this problem with MW1.6.x in not properly recognising
closing
HTML < /TABLE > tags. (1.6.0 had it, 1.6.3 still has it, not up to implementing 1.6.5 yet)
Please provide the URL to a page containing a sample of such failing code. It is in general difficult to comment on a problem without specific information.
