Might I recommend WordPress, at http://www.wordpress.org. MediaWiki is a wiki engine designed to allow free-form content creation. WordPress is a blog engine.
Another to look at is Serendipity http://www.s9y.org/ Also drupal and plone both have blogging modules.
Mediawiki is great as a wiki platform, but sometimes it's better not to try turning it into a Swiss army knife.
