Out of curiosity, why is the sidebar getting replaced by a blank sidebar
for private wikis not automatic yet requires hacks? Doesn't seem
particularly difficult to merge into core...setting read access hides the
wiki content yet left the sidebar exposed...

Hi, does anyone know how to make this sidebar hack work in Timeless?
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Interface/Sidebar/Hacks
Or is there another hack that can accomplish the same thing in Timeless
(making the sidebar blank for non-logged-in users, to protect the privacy
of a non-public wiki)? Thanks. -Sam
Some follow-up investigation on my part, in regard to my previous post
[0]. (Apologies from not simply replying to it and if that screws up
threading in the list archives; it looks like my mail is a bit screwy at
the moment.)
I forgot to include that my PHP version is 7.1.18.
Assuming that maintenance/update.php is blowing up at the "Adding ipb_id
field to table ipblocks" step (since that's where the useful output
appeared to stop), I tried to do some digging into where this might be
occurring. I found several scripts under maintenance/archives (assuming
this is the path for MySQL/MariaDB scripts, since other paths seem to
indicate other RDBMSes) where field "ipb_id" was being added to table
"ipblocks".
I then took a look at DB backup that I took immediately before attempting
the upgrade. Sure enough, column "ipb_id" already exists on table
"ipblocks" in my MW 1.30.0 DB. I'm beginning to wonder if the MW 1.31.0
update.php script is attempting to ALTER ipblocks to add ipb_id when it
already exists, causing the entire script to bomb. Unfortunately, it looks
like update.php is a infinitely spiraling nest of dependencies and
call-backs, so I doubt I'll have time to dig any deeper than that.

Hi,
A new episode of the MediaWiki podcast "Between the Brackets" is out - this
time, an interview with Ben Fletcher, a systems architect who is in charge
of MediaWiki at the UK Ministry of Defence. You can listen to the podcast
here:

Every time I submit a patch to gerrit using the git review command, I get
two warning messages that I ignore. I just want to make sure that I can
continue to safely ignore them (or else, how to get rid of them).
The first one says:
Using global/system git-review config files
(/etc/git-review/git-review.conf) is deprecated
The second one says:
remote: Pushing to refs/publish/* is deprecated, use refs/for/*
instead.
Thanks,
Huji
Is it possible to download for instance this version of Cite :
https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/plugins/gitiles/mediawiki/extensions/Cite/+/…
- via the browser, as a zipped file to place on the server?
I know this version of MW is unsupported. Just want to know if there is a
straightforward way to access compatible versions of extensions I'd like to
use.
This is for a small wiki edited and hacked by one individual only - myself.
Thanks in advance for any help or guidance on this ! :-)

Hi All,
I always notice that our open source work around MediaWiki does not reach
everyone and similarly its difficult to find what awesome work someone else
has done. The only way we find extensions currently is through a web search.
Therefore, I am planning to start a monthly digest email with all the new
stuff - extensions, feature additions, scripts, etc.
This can only be done collaboratively. So I have created a new page on
mediawiki.org [1] where anyone can add their work and after a while it gets
published here in the digest mail. I have already added some of my recent
projects.
I am hopeful that other developers/users find this useful, your comments
(and help) are welcome :)

I know this is not the ideal place to ask this, but I am hoping that
someone among the listserv users has some knowledge on how to make a
proposal to W3.org about modifications in the CSS standard.
Namely, the list-style-type property[1] in CSS has values like
"lower-alpha" and "hebrew" and "persian", and I would like to propose a new
value "persian-alpha" which would be the alphabetical ordering of lists in
Persian (commonly used in books for footnotes). But I don't know where to
start.
Please advise!

Hi! .. Could someone help decide if the work around is for a known issue with the extension: Auth-Remoteuser [0] is valid for MW-1.30
I'm running an Enterprise MW 1.30 on RHEL7 with CA Policy Agent on Apache as the enterprise access control mechanism and I'm having the exact problem that has been described here [1] as the "First Save Bug"
However, that issue is from the mid-2000's and I'm not having any luck contacting the original posters about the workaround solution they described as:
Try adding:
```
if( !isset( $_COOKIE[session_name()] ) ) { User::SetupSession(); }
```
in front of the $wg->isLoggedIn() and see if that helps.
(presumably in the mediawiki file "User.php")
I'm eager to solve this issue I'm having [2] and think this might be a solution, but I could use some expert insight.
Thanks and Happy Friday!
-Rich
