What's the status for the idea to adapt the MW platform for using media
from Commons in ("live") image links?
I recall an idea being discussed earlier was to cache pictures on the
calling MW site after the first fetch from Commons. The idea was to try
to avoid wasting bandwidth by providing a means for external sites to
not having to repeatedly retrieving the same picture several times.
What's the current status of this idea? Or is it already possible (and
allowed) to retrieve images from Commons via "live links"?

I'm considering FCKeditor+MediaWiki (http://mediawiki.fckeditor.net/) as a WYSIWYG editor for our wiki. Is anyone out there using this in a "serious" environment? Is the current "proof of concept" implementation reliable? Is it ever destructive (i.e., incorrect edits, broken saves)?
I know there are some small bugs (e.g., double-click a word to highlight it, click Italics, and you get ''foobar<space> '' instead of ''foobar''). Any more significant issues?
Or does it work great for you?
Thanks,
DanB
I made a change in my interwiki table and it's not showing up - I
assume this is because that table is in the cache. Is that right? Is
there a command line way to flush the cache?

Wow...you guys be quick!
OK. I knew we were putting things in different segregated containers, for some reason. Now I know some of the reasons.
Very helpful responses. Thanks.

Hey all. I've been a subscriber for a few months and have been trying to learn about Wikis. One catch I have is that I simply have not gotten the concept of "namespace" drummed into my head. I know you can create them, and I've generally read the "help" on MediaWiki regarding namespaces, but I guess I'm just not cluing in on why they are useful and why I might want to create different ones (other than the defaults) on a wiki. Why are we separating different wiki pages out into different namespaces??
I'm not asking for anyone here to write me a big treatise on them; but if anyone can refer me to some online source that might have a good explanation, I'd appreciate it.
Sorry the question is so general. Maybe it's too general to answer. I just think that this is just one of those basic concepts I've got to get a handle on before I can understand mediawiki.
Thanks
Hi Guys,
Can you please let me know the best way to sort articles under Category
Page?
I have managed to sort it, but its a big ugly as articles starts with
NameSpace:Article_Name. I have seen some wiki where the namespace is at the
end e.g.
My Article (NameSpace_Name)
I used "{{DEFAULTSORT:{{PAGENAME}}}} but it only sorted the articles but the
namespace is stil in front.
Any help will be highly appreciated.

Awhile back I had written in to look for mod_rewrite help in moving my
MediaWiki from one url to another. I finally accomplished the move, while
still retaining the ability to correctly process any legacy hard-coded urls
that may be floating around. Now, any url addressed to:
http://old.domain.name:16080/index.php/Article_name
Will get properly redirected to
http://new.domain.name/wiki/Article_name
I followed the instructions available from MediaWiki to truncate the
servername within the Apache virtualhost config file, but also added the
following to an .htaccess file in the olddomainname directory to process
requests for the old domain name.
I am posting this in the helps that it will help with someone else's
migration needs:
# The lines below do the article and url translation:
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^old.domain.name:16080$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/index.php($|/.*$)
RewriteRule ^(.*) http://new.domain.name/wiki%1 [R=301,NC,L]
# The lines below take any other old.domain.name urls
# and redirects them to new.domain.name
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^old.domain.name$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^($|/.*$)
RewriteRule ^(.*) http://new.domain.name/wiki%1 [R=301,NC,L]

I want to display the Recentchanges only for certain namespaces. I can do
this easily for a single namespace, e.g. Talk pages, using the drop-down
menu at the top of the Recentpages page. But is it possible to display all
changes in, say, two or three namespaces? A feed would be nice too.
Is this possible?
Thanks

Hi,
We are running MediaWiki 1.12. We can cause an "Internal Error" by using
the following recipe.
1. Set $wgMinimalPasswordLength to 6.
2. Browse (as bureaucrat and sysop) to
http://example.com/index.php?title=Special:Userlogin&type=signup
3. Enter a new username, e.g. "UserFoo".
4. Leave both password fields blank.
5. Enter a valid e-mail address in the e-mail field.
6. Click "by e-mail".
Expected behavior:
1. Get a page titled "Password sent".
2. Temporary password shows up at entered e-mail.
Actual behavior:
1. Get a page titled "Internal Error" and the following content:
>
> #0 /export/web/sites01/mediawiki/cyclopath/includes/SpecialUserlogin.php(338): User->setPassword('-')
> #1 /export/web/sites01/mediawiki/cyclopath/includes/SpecialUserlogin.php(320): LoginForm->initUser(Object(User), false)
> #2 /export/web/sites01/mediawiki/cyclopath/includes/SpecialUserlogin.php(117): LoginForm->addNewAccountInternal()
> #3 /export/web/sites01/mediawiki/cyclopath/includes/SpecialUserlogin.php(96): LoginForm->addNewAccountMailPassword()
> #4 /export/web/sites01/mediawiki/cyclopath/includes/SpecialUserlogin.php(17): LoginForm->execute()
> #5 [internal function]: wfSpecialUserlogin(NULL, Object(SpecialPage))
> #6 /export/web/sites01/mediawiki/cyclopath/includes/SpecialPage.php(678): call_user_func('wfSpecialUserlo...', NULL, Object(SpecialPage))
> #7 /export/web/sites01/mediawiki/cyclopath/includes/SpecialPage.php(464): SpecialPage->execute(NULL)
> #8 /export/web/sites01/mediawiki/cyclopath/includes/Wiki.php(193): SpecialPage::executePath(Object(Title))
> #9 /export/web/sites01/mediawiki/cyclopath/includes/Wiki.php(45): MediaWiki->initializeSpecialCases(Object(Title), Object(OutputPage), Object(WebRequest))
> #10 /export/web/sites01/mediawiki/cyclopath/index.php(90): MediaWiki->initialize(Object(Title), Object(OutputPage), Object(User), Object(WebRequest))
> #11 {main}
2. No password shows up at e-mail.
We do have a custom AuthPlugin but the backtrace above does not touch
it. UserFoo is created in our external database, but going
Special:Userlogin and clicking "E-mail password" complains that no such
user exists.
A workaround seems to be to enter a dummy password of sufficient length,
but this is a little annoying, particularly since I'm uncomfortable
giving everyone the same dummy password.
Help? Is there something we can edit to fix this?
Thanks,
Reid
